Interesting rebuttal. I just finished this book and as a manager in a growing company found it to be refreshing and insightful. To me the book represents an introduction to a new science that will be furthered as proactive managers apply the principles in their own organizations and continue discussions just like this one. One thing that is missing in any new doctrine is case studies ... obviously this is due to the new nature of the doctrine. At first I had much the same reaction that is voiced by Frank, however after some reflection I believe it is up to me and every other manager to apply the principles in our own organizations how we can. Each organization is going to be a little different in its implementation. Naturally the authors are coming from the standpoint of the data collected since they are from Gallup, and aer very strong in analysis and the psychology of organizational change. I am glad now after thinking through that there were no heavy prescriptions given to follow after. This will no doubt cause me some extra work up front, and some trail and error as we go, but as the authors said this is part of the process.Frank I appreciate your article and you raise important questions, ones that can help us all push this great new thinking forward. I do however believe the authors addressed these issues adequately in the text (For instance near the end when they spoke of the lack of good case studies coming from people who write into them). I am looking forward to seeing future editions to see how tehy may integrate more real life stories and adding important insight.

The authors should be congratulated on a wonderful book. My disappointment is the lack of explanation of the model. The book does not allow the reader to undertake self diagnosis of their own organisation. It's a big hole in the otherwise wonderful book.

By the way the Gallup site doesn't help either.
